Karloff-Lugosi Collection from Shout?

3 Stars

I’ve heard that this is supposedly coming from Shout, and includes THE BLACK CAT(1934), THE RAVEN(1935), THE INVISIBLE RAY(1936), and BLACK FRIDAY(1940). Can anyone confirm this?

Aren't all four of these films Public Domain though?

no actually all are owned by universal, that's been doing a bang-up job on restorations of all of its old horror classics, so universal is not going to release everything they're going to go through one of the boutique labels to get rid of the other titles that they have.

  2. I have the Bela Lugosi collection on DVD that was released a few years ago that has these exact same 4 films. I believe it also has Murders in the Rue Morgue. It was part of the "Franchise Collection" by Universal. All of the films looked great in 480p. This would be a nice upgrade as I particularly enjoyed The Black Cat and the Raven.

This is a dream come true. The Black Cat is a stunning film. It's pricey though.

Yeah, I get that it ain't free to license 4 movies and I'm planning on buying this on day 1 to support the effort but with a $70 MSRP, it seems like it will have trouble selling good numbers (which may stop other Universal horror movies coming from Scream).

For that, they better add a lot of extras. Shout Factory, if you're listening, please let David Del Valle do the commentary!

Actually, don't! I can't stand Del Valle's "commentaries". I'd rather have someone more analytical and factual. Del Valle is too gossipy and he dishes (his commentary on TT's The Barefoot Contessa was appalling!). Of course, I don't have to listen to it.

  5. I hope I am wrong, but I just can't see Universal spending the money and time of transferring these titles with the care and end results of the Legacy series. My guess is they will be from hi def masters done awhile ago and looking more like WEREWOLF OF LONDON and SHE WOLF OF LONDON. I hope I am wrong because 3 of the films in this set are 3 of my favorites. I would think if these were new 4k scans, Shout would have used that fact to promote these films. But, I am hoping…..

  6. This is my “own” opinion and don’t intend to offend but….

It seems that lately SHOUT! FACTORY (or SCREAM) has become more like KINO-LORBER STUDIO CLASSICS (ie. CURSE OF THE CAT PEOPLE and THE BLACK CAT) and Kino has become more like SHOUT! (ie. KINGDOM OF THE SPIDERS).

Frankly, I liked it the other way.

  7. The price is higher because these films aren't exactly in the same league, as far as popularity goes, of the Classic Monsters films. I'm sure it wasn't cheap for Shout to license them and they need to make their money back in an ever-shrinking market for physical releases. Sadly, I suspect we'll see more and more niche releases from these smaller labels costing more money in order for the releasing company to make any money off of them. It is what it is. Shout is usually pretty good about including supplements on their sets that cost more, so I have no reason to doubt that this will be the case in this instance.

Unfortunately Shout Factory is always pricey and their titles very rarely available at good sale prices of under $18.00 unlike most of the other boutique labels.

$55 if ordered directly from Shout. Four movies, likely with extras. That's $13.75 per movie at that price. Really not bad. If this were a laserdisc box set… šŸ™‚

If my memory is correct, Universal put out The Black Cat and The Raven as a double feature laserdisc with each of the films time-compressed to allow for one movie per CLV side. So you'd be paying up to hear Karloff and Lugosi sound like Alvin and the Chipmunks! šŸ˜‰

    And for $40!
