Aside from a quite extraordinary Dolby Atmos track, the question that ran through my mind while viewing the latest in the Cloverfield series, was " why?"

The film seems a bit of a mashup of Alien, The Big Sleep and Beat the Devil.

    One superb outer space opera.

A superb noir, with an extremely convoluted plot...

and a third film with virtually no discernible plot whatsoever.

But while those three productions are all a pleasure to watch, The Cloverfield Paradox seems an odd choice for what seems to be a large budget production.

The Blu-ray is also a bit confusing, at least to me, as while it was seemingly shot with anamorphics, lights in background of shots are not elliptical.

Did I mention that it has a terrific Dolby Atmos track?

This movie is what I’d call an honorary member of the Cloverfield franchise. The movie has done nothing to earn the title, it’s more like an “atta boy” pat on the head.

The existence of this release should reassure people who are worried about Roma never getting a release on disc.

Except that it took a year for this to appear on disc. It's also a Paramount film, and will be released by them on disc. Presumably they sold the rights to Netflix for a one-year window which is now expiring.

Not sure what the Netflix deal is for Roma, as it's not owned by a major studio.

To be fair, the 2 "sequels" both have little to do with the first movie. They're separate properties linked to the original in a loose way.

"Lane" was a good movie, though, whereas "Paradox" is a derivative, dull mess...

"The Cloverfield Paradox" is a mess of a movie. Clearly a lot of post-production reshoots were done to attempt to create a cohesive narrative. It's an awful film with two scenes that are highlights 1) the arm 2) discovering the person in the wall.

The only reason this release exists is because Paramount produced the film and retained the rights to put it out on disc when they sold the movie to Netflix.

Similarly, Netflix doesn't own the content on their TV side that has been released to disc. Daredevil and the Marvel shows are produced and owned by Disney, Kimmy Schmidt is produced and owned by Universal, Orange is the New Black is produced and owned by Lionsgate, etc. These are cases where the producing studio and the airing network are not vertically integrated. Those contracts probably allow the studio that owns it to put out the disc after such-and-such window of exclusivity to Netflix. I'm not sure who owns Stranger Things -- if Netflix owns it fully, that might be the only thing that they've put out on disc.

Because Netflix owns Roma outright, there is no outside studio there wanting to release it on Blu-ray, and therefore seems to be no precedent that would support their releasing it on disc. If they did, it would be a first in terms of films that they fully own that have made it to disc.

The is the point I was making with "the honorable mention" thing. At least Lane had the decency to be good, not so much with Paradox. As far as being linked to Cloverfield, both were disappointing. All IMHO, of course.

At this point, they clearly intend "Cloverfield" to be an anthology like "Twilight Zone" or something - though a bit more linked, as all deal with sci-fi themes/aliens in some way.

We agree that both "Lane" and "Paradox" could've existed without the Cloverfield connection just fine!

It’s not clear to me that Cloverfield is going to be an anthology. Both Lane and Paradox are so tenuously linked to Cloverfield that I consider it to be a bait and switch tactic. Promise one thing but deliver something else. So far all they’ve done is to whisper “Cloverfield” during the production of both films. Maybe they didn’t even do that for Paradox.

I don't know if we'll get any more "Cloverfield" films, but my point was that they're presenting them in an anthology manner - different stories under the same banner with only tenuous links...

I can agree to disagree. Seems like a read somewhere that Paradox had no Cloverfield connection when first produced and the “connection” was added to piggyback on the popularity of Cloverfield. I think the idea that Paradox is a Cloverfield movie is dishonest.

I think of an anthology as something like the Twilight Zone. The stories aren’t connected except by theme or genre. One episode is not confusing a previous episode. Then there’s American Horror Story where each season has a different story arc but many of the actors return from the previous episode.

I don’t see that in Paradox and I have to bring out my magnifying glass to find it in Lane. All IMHO, of course.

They're "Cloverfield" movies because the producers said they were "Cloverfield" movies. Both "Lane" and "Paradox" were independent properties shoehorned into the "Cloverfield" universe...

And I draw the line not at what the producers claim but at the content of the movies. In my world (and welcome to it), there’s been only one Cloverfield movie. I do believe we are on a repeating loop here. ;)

This is not the first time I’ve created my own movie world. I felt so betrayed by Alien 3 that in my world, it doesn’t exist. Gotta have some way to cope with disappointment. :)
